RiRi Hair Extensions Care Guide
Looking for hair extension care advice? We’ve bundled all the tips, tricks, and instructions on how to look after your extensions into one place, so you can get the absolute most out of your beautiful hair.
Caring for your hair extensions is literally non-negotiable. Who wants extensions that only last a few weeks? Definitely not us, and we’re guessing not you, either.
So, if you want to know exactly how to care for your RiRis—ever heard of being high maintenance to be low maintenance?—we’re here to give you the complete rundown of looking after your precious hair extensions.
Synthetic Clip-in Extensions Care
Even though it’s not real hair (although, by the looks of it, you’d never know), your synthetic clip-ins actually need a bit of love and care.
But you’ll be pleased to know that keeping them fresh and fierce is as easy as can be, and this is how.
Whether you’re a lover of a bouncy curl, crave a wave, or have to have a sleek straight moment, they all have one thing in common, and that’s the need to be brushed.
Brushing your hair extensions keeps them knot-free, seamless, and smooth—as they should be.
So how do you do it? You simply need our Deluxe Hair Extension Brush. It’s gentle, soft, and made specifically for your RiRis. It really is a must-have.
Starting from the ends, holding the tops, gently brush the extensions without pulling or tugging them.
Slowly work your way up to the top for a gorgeous mane of brushed-out hair.
We hope you know this one, but you should never wash your RiRi synthetic hair.
Although you might think you’re giving them a nice refresh, you need to remember they’re not made from real hair, and the synthetic fibres can’t handle the chemicals in shampoo and conditioner.
If you do wash them, they’ll become dry, brittle, and difficult to brush.
Luckily (and super helpfully), our stunning RiRi hair extensions come pre-styled and will hold their shape for months.
If you think your curly extensions need a refresh, you can use our Deluxe Brush to do this. You can see how in the video above, but you basically wrap the hair around the brush. It’s so easy yet so effective!
Here are a few other things to be aware of:
- Never use heat on RiRi’s synthetic hair
- Never dye, tone, or colour synthetic hair
- Never use heavy products like gel or a hair mask

You might not think so, but the way you store your hair extensions has a huge impact on their lifespan.
To do it properly, you literally need our Hanger & Bag Combo, and you'll be good to go.
Simply clip your extensions to your hanger when they’re not in use and hook them into the bag. Store in a cool, dry place, and you’re done!
You shouldn’t hang them in direct sunlight (like near a window) or heat, so your best bet is an unused cupboard, a wardrobe, or a drawer.
Synthetic Ponytail Extensions Care
Just like your standard clip-in wefts, your ponytails and scrunchies need a bit of TLC to get the most possible wear out of them.
As they’re synthetic, you don’t need to do much maintenance, but what you do will make a huge difference to the quality of your beautiful RiRis.
To brush your ponytail clip-in, hold the top of the hair piece and gently brush from the ends upwards using our Deluxe Hair Extension Brush.
Aim to brush them every time you put them into storage, and you won’t have to worry about knots or tangles ever again. Perfect!
Oh, and just a PSA, you don’t need to brush your Messy Bun Scrunchie. She’ll be fine as she is.
You shouldn’t wash your synthetic ponytails from RiRi because they’re not made to do so.
Washing them will ruin the fibres, so it’s a big no. Period.
So long as you have followed good care, you shouldn’t really need to wash the extensions.
Just like our single-weft extensions, our ponytails come pre-styled, so heat is not needed and definitely not advised.
You can, of course, use heat on your natural hair to match the extensions, but that's where we draw the line, girls.
You should not…
- Use heat
- Use dye or colouring products (use our FREE colour match service if you need a new set of extensions to match your freshly coloured natural hair!)
- Use excessive styling products
But there are tons of ways you can have fun with our clip-in ponytails! Here are just a few of the ways we love to style them:
- Half-up, half-down
- Slick back ponytails
- Braided locks
- Messy pony
- Bouncy blow-dry ponytail
We also have a style guide full of ponytail ideas if you want even more inspo!
Proper storage for your ponytail piece only involves our Hanger & Bag Combo and a cool, dry place. That’s literally it.
Simply clip your pony to the hanger and place it in the bag, ready to get hung up. We recommend doing this after every time you wear your extensions.

Human Hair Extensions Care
If you have yourself some of our stunnin’ human hair extensions, you’ll want to take real good care of them to make sure they last and are worth the pennies you spent on them.
These bad boys are real human hair, so they need a little more attention than our OG synthetics.
Brush your human hair extensions daily, or after each use, to prevent knotting or matting.
We highly recommend you use our Deluxe Hair Extension Brush, which has been designed especially for extensions. Any other brush or one of cheap quality may pull or snag the hair, causing damage.
Simply hold the top of your extensions and begin brushing gently from the bottom, slowly working your way up for a stunningly knot-free mane.
If you do experience any tangles or knots, gently finger-detangle and use our Deluxe Brush to smooth through.
For the most part, you can wash your human hair extensions as you would your own hair, with a few extra considerations.
For human hair clip-ins, you should wash them in the sink with extension-safe shampoo and conditioner. We advise using the RiRi Shampoo and RiRi Conditioner, which you can get individually or as part of our Full Care Set.
Do this whenever you feel they need a refresh.
When you have the time, let them air dry to reduce heat damage, but if you’re in a rush, you can use a hair dryer or diffuser on a low setting, with a heat protectant applied.
Our human tape-in extensions adopt the same process, but since tape-ins are semi-permanent and attached to your hair, it’s okay to wash these while they’re installed.
As always, girls brush them before and after a wash, avoiding scrubbing near the tapes.
Heat styling or colouring your human hair extensions is mostly okay to do so—within reason.
We recommend keeping any heat you do use to a minimum and always on the lowest setting (never above 180 degrees C) with a heat protectant applied. This will prolong your extensions and give you way more use out of them.
Dying or colouring your hair is possible since this is real hair, but we don’t totally recommend it, as any sort of colourants are harsh and will naturally cause some sort of damage, particularly if not done correctly.
If you do get the itch, please go to a professional hairstylist who can do things properly.
And as for products, good-quality gels, creams, and sprays are safe, but steer clear of nasty chemicals.
Just remember to give your extensions a wash when a lot of product has built up or they just need a lil freshen-up.
When not wearing your real clip-ins, you should store them in our Hanger & Bag Combo.
The hanger has a wide-mouth opening to sandwich the weft in between. You can then zip up the bag and hang your extensions somewhere safe (as well as out of direct sunlight and heat).
Brushing them beforehand will ensure they’re not knotty when you reach for them next, and we don’t ever recommend storing them when they’re wet.
Sleeping in clip-ins is a big no, too, so you should always take them out before you go to sleep.

Since synthetic hair extensions aren’t made from real human hair, they react differently to water and wash products.
Synthetic hair extensions are only meant for temporary use. You simply can’t refresh them, and if you do, you’ll actually be shortening their lifespan.
Instead, follow our care instructions above.
The result of washing your synthetic RiRis will end in frizzing, tangling, and a loss of shape or curl pattern.
Synthetic extensions are made with specialised coated fibres that give them their desired texture and style.
When these fibres are exposed to water, the coating can be stripped away, leaving the hair looking dull and lifeless.
Making your hair extensions last longer is easy and requires minimal effort; here’s what you need to do:
- Gently brush out knots starting from the bottom
- Store them properly
- Never sleep or exercise in them
- Always avoid heat
- Never wash them
While you can use other gentle hair extension brushes, our Deluxe Hair Extension Brush has been specifically designed for use on RiRi hair extensions.
Using a different brush is like putting milk in your tea first—it works, but it’s a little controversial.
We recommend our brush because its soft, gentle bristles glide through the hair without pulling. Dreamy locks are easy to achieve with this bad boy.
You can, but that doesn’t mean we recommend it.
Dying your own hair extensions can be risky (unless you’re a professional hairstylist) because you don’t know the strength of the dye, how the hair will react, and, let’s face it, a second opinion is always worth it.
We suggest booking a colour change at a professional hair salon.
Using heat on your synthetic extensions will cause the coating around the synthetic fibres to melt over time, causing frizzing, snapping, and dryness.
Remember Gemma Collins's CBB frazzled hair moment?
In short, steer clear of heat styling. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Sleeping in your clip-in hair extensions can cause a whole host of problems, but most importantly, you’ll wake up in a tangled, matted mess.
The clips will also pull on your natural hair throughout the night, causing pain and damage, and we deffo don’t want that for your natural locks.
If you want your hair extensions and your natural hair to remain intact, take them out and pop them into storage before getting your beauty sleep.
If you want to make sure you store your extensions properly while they aren't in use, we definitely recommend our Hanger & Bag Combo.
They’re the perfect fit for your RiRis and the ideal environment to store them in when they’re not in use.
