Girls, if you don't store your hair extensions properly, what are you doing? You do know that proper storage will make them even more long-lasting? Have we taught you nothing?! Sounds like you need some tips, so here's our guide on how to store hair extensions.
It's not at all difficult to store your hair extensions, but it's defo necessary.
Wouldn't you much rather get as much wear out of your extensions as possible? We thought so.
No matter if you have synthetic or human hair, the 3 ground rules are,
Never throw them on your dresser, vanity, or bedroom floor. NEVER.
Always, always, always brush through the hair after wearing them.
Keep them somewhere out of direct sunlight (ideally in a storage bag).
Follow those, and you’ll have great hair for longer.
Now, let’s get into the nitty gritty of clip-in extension storage.

Storing hair extensions properly is pretty much life or death. Not for you. But for your extensions.
Okay, that might be a little dramatic, but it’s kinda true. If you don't care for your hair extensions by properly storing them when they aren't worn, their life span will seriously reduce.
But why will their lifespan be reduced, and what's so good about putting them in storage? Let's get into it:
Prevents tangling & matting — Hair extensions can quickly become tangled and matted if left loose or not stored correctly.
Maintains shape & texture — Whether straight, wavy, or curly, hair extensions can lose their natural shape if they're just left out after being worn.
Protects from dust & dirt — Exposure to dust and pollutants can cause extensions to lose their shine, which would simply be tragic.
Reduces shedding & breakage — Extensions can shed or break if they're constantly exposed to friction. If they're stored in their own protective bag , the damage will be minimised.
Preserves moisture & softness — Proper storage prevents dryness, which can lead to brittle, lifeless extensions. No, thank you.
Prevents kinks or creases — If left folded up in storage, your extensions could develop weird kinks and bends, making them look seriously unkempt.
Increases lifespan — Obviously! Proper storage of your hair extensions prevents all of the above, so, of course, their lifespan will be increased.
Now that you know why you should store your hair extensions, it's likely you'll want to know how immediately.
Or you should, anyway.
Depending on what kind of hair extensions you have, there will be a slightly different method of storage. Obviously, if you have semi-permanent hair extensions, like tape-ins , you don't need to worry about storage because, well, they're in your head.
But if you have clip-ins, synthetic extensions, or human hair extensions, this guide is for you, so let's get into it.
It literally couldn't be simpler.
All you need to do is remove your extensions at the end of the day (no sleeping in them!) and give them a good detangle with a brush created for hair extensions (we highly recommend our Deluxe Hair Extension Brush ).
Start at the ends and work your way up to the clips to prevent pulling.
You should then use a hair extensions hanger, which is literally clothes hanger but for your wefts.
Our Hair Extensions Hanger simply opens up like a mouth and secures the weft when shut. It doesn’t damage the clips, wefts, or hair, so you know your extensions will always be safe and sound while they’re stored away.
For extra protection, you should pop the hair into a zippable bag. This will stop dust and moisture from collecting in the hair, not to mention, it’s a much better environment for the hair than just thrown on your bedroom floor at the end of a night out.
You can get both the hanger and the bag in our Hanger & Bag Combo. Handy, hey.
Once you’ve got your wefts hung and zipped up, we recommend hanging them in a wardrobe away from direct sunlight and other heat sources.
If you can, you should also keep them away from dampness and humid areas, which can cause frizz and mould.
Human hair extensions involve a few extra steps because the hair should be washed before being put back in storage . It's probably not the best idea to store them when they're dirty, you know?
So, if they've got a heavy product build-up, you should wash them with a high-quality, extensions-safe shampoo and conditioner (like ours), and either let them air dry or blow dry them on a low setting.
Once dry, you should use our Deluxe Hair Extension Brush and make sure they're silky smooth.
The rest of the steps are identical to clip-in and synthetic hair extensions, so follow the info above for the proper storage steps.
Matting is actually a common issue with hair extensions because people don't fully understand the importance of care and maintenance. But as always, we're here to give you the details.
Basically, the solution is to brush daily . Whether you're on the go or just at home, the minute you think you need a detangling sesh, you should go for it.
You should always start brushing the ends first, work your way up to the roots, and hold the hair at the top to avoid tugging on the clips or bonds.

If you have clip-ins, we'd also suggest brushing them after removal and before you place them in storage. But you should know that now anyway.
Also, one last thing — never, ever, EVER sleep in your clip-ins . That's just matting waiting to happen.
To protect your tape-ins or another semi-permanent form of hair extension, you should sleep with a silk bonnet or in a protective hairstyle like plaits .
If you really wanna know how to store your hair extensions perfectly, below are a few bonus tips you should consider. They'll just make your life easier and make your extensions last longer.
Never store damp or wet hair extensions — Mildew can develop, which you definitely won't want.
Keep them in a dust-free environment — This will help maintain cleanliness. Dusty extensions aren't too pretty.
Avoid over-brushing — There's such a thing as too much of a good thing. Too much brushing can lead to shedding and breakage over time.
Label your storage bags — If you have multiple extensions, it might be handy to label your bags so you don't have to unzip them each time you want to wear them. We love an organised queen.
If you follow our guidance, you'll have envy-worthy hair extensions for months on end . It's all about proper storage.
Just like anything else, hair extensions need to be kept in specific conditions, or you won't get the most out of their wear. And no one wants that.

Proper storage of hair extensions when travelling is essential. Otherwise, they could become damaged, dirty, and broken.
To prevent this, you should use a hanger and bag . To read more about caring for your hair extensions while travelling, check out our blog post!
You should use a proper hair extensions hanger, rather than trying to use a makeshift one or just throwing them in a drawer.
A hanger designed specifically for hair extensions will have a wide ‘mouth’ opening or clip that will gently but securely close over the weft at the top.
You should then hang them up somewhere away from direct sunlight and heat, like on a safe door handle or in your wardrobe if you have plenty of space (don’t put them here if your wardrobe is overflowing with clothes, though!).
The secret to longer-lasting hair extensions is proper care. Many people neglect their extensions, but this is basically asking for them to become matted and tangled.
You should brush the hair daily and properly, gently detangling any knots with your fingers.
Keep them stored properly (not just on your bedside table or on your chair of doom), and don’t use any unnecessary product or heat on them.
We know how important it is to look after your extensions here at RiRi, which is why we offer our essential Hanger & Bag Combo to keep your extensions in when you're not wearing them. The hanger has clips featured , so you can hang your extensions with ease.
We also have a Deluxe Extension Brush , which is great at removing tangles before you place the extensions in storage. This gentle brush is a game changer.
