How to Attach Clip In Hair Extensions: Step by Step Guide!

Obtain the Required Tools
First, in order to successfully clip in your hair extensions, you’ll need to gather a few items.
These items include:
- Your set of extensions
- A brush
- A large claw clip
- A mirror
- Your preferred styling tools
Once you’ve gathered these items you’re ready to begin.
Brush Your Hair
Before you begin clipping in your extensions, you want to grab a RiRi hair brush and fully brush out your hair.
Start from your roots and work your way down to the ends. Getting rid of any tangles that may be in your hair will make the process of clipping in the extensions much easier.
Section off Hair at Top
Grab a rat-tail comb and make a horizontal part across your scalp, separating your hair into two sections. You want this part to be about two inches above the nape of your neck.
Grab a claw clip or any large hair clip to secure the top section of your hair at the top of your head.
Position the Weft
Grab the weft of clip in hair extensions that will allow you to achieve the length of hair you’d like in that section, and brush through it ensuring there are no tangles.
Measure the weft against your head to ensure it will fit in that section of your hair.
Tease your roots where you’ll be clipping in the weft, as this can prevent the clip from sliding down and also make it much more comfortable on your scalp.
Clip the Weft
Starting with the clip in the middle of the weft, clip it to the roots of your hair in the middle of your head. Ensure you’re clipping it as close to the roots as possible.
Gently tug on the clip to make sure it’s secure.
Once the middle is clipped in, clip the clips on the left, pulling the weft taught while doing so. Then repeat this with the clips on the right.
You’ll repeat this process of sectioning off your hair horizontally, teasing your roots, and clipping the wefts into your hair until there are none left.
Do the Number of Clips Matter?
Take note of the fact that each weft has a different number of clips — this corresponds with where on your scalp they should be placed.
The first weft you clip in at the base of your neck should be a three clip weft.
About an inch above that weft, right at the top of your ears, you should apply a smaller four clip weft. Clip in the two middle clips first, followed by the two clips on either side.
About an inch above that weft, right at the widest part of your head, you should place the widest four clip weft.
Separate a section of hair at the top of your head, just about two inches below your crown, and clip in the second three clip weft. At this point, all the larger wefts should be secured to your roots and you should only have the smaller wefts left.
The smaller two clip wefts will be secured to the roots on the sides of your head. These will help to add volume and help the longer extensions in the back of your hair blend in with your natural hair.
Separate a section of hair about two inches above your ear, then tease your roots and secure a two clip weft. Clip first the clip closer to your hairline, followed by the clip closest to the back of your head. Repeat this process with the other two clip weft on the other side of your head.
Last, separate a small section of hair right above the two clip weft. Grab your one clip weft and secure it into a small section of your roots right above the two clip weft or anywhere else that you think needs some more volume and blending. Repeat this on the other side.

Blend With Your Hair
Once all of your wefts are fully secured in their sections, release any remaining hair that was clipped up.
Check in the mirror and make sure all the weft clips are hidden, especially in the back of your head where your vision is limited.
Blend the extensions with your natural hair, either by running your fingers through your hair or brushing it out gently. Be careful to avoid the clips when doing so, as you don’t want to detach them from your roots.
Style Your Hair
If you’re using high-quality human hair or synthetic extensions that are heat-friendly, you can style your hair however you want.
Blow drying, curling, or straightening your hair and the extensions at the same time will create a more seamless look. For example, if you’re planning on curling your hair you won’t want to curl the extensions before clipping them in.
