Knowing how to blend hair extensions with your natural hair is so important. You don't want your clips poking out from your scalp!

But how do you do it right?

If it's your first time wearing hair extensions and you're having a bit of trouble achieving a perfect, seamless blend, then stick around!

We've been in the hair extensions game for a long time, so we've got all the tips and tricks to know, including how to perfect seamless hair extensions.

Clip-in extensions are the easiest to install. but we know that sometimes your hair won't cooperate, or you don't know what you're doing wrong, but you just can't get your extensions to look quite right.

To help you fix your hair woes, we've listed out our best advice and top tips for blending your clip-in extensions with your natural hair so you can feel and look your absolute best in your new RiRis.

How to Put in Clip-in Hair Extensions

One of the first steps to achieving seamless hair extensions is to know how to install them properly.

Whilst it should only typically take a few minutes, it might take a few tries for first-time wearers to get the hang of it. We recommend playing around taking your extensions in and out when your first get them before you go wearing them out and about so you can get familiar with the process.

If you're not installing your extensions correctly, it can cause the clips to be visible beneath your natural hair and can make them difficult to blend.

We have an entire blog post that gets into the nitty-gritty of how to put in clip-in extensions, which you can read right here

But we've got a very brief rundown below, including a video.

Step 1: Brush Your Hair & Hair Extensions

To begin, brush through your own hair to get rid of any tangles before installing your extensions.

Then, brush through the extensions to smooth them out. Use our Deluxe Hair Extensions Brush for the best results.

Step 2: Part Your Hair

Separate your hair into a half-up hairstyle, loosely tying the top of your hair with a hair band.

Create the part from ear to ear. If you're using multiple wefts, you'll need to part your hair more than once, starting closer to the bottom of your neck.

Step 3: Clip in the Extensions

Take your clip-in weft and position it again on the bottom half of your hair, as close to the roots as possible. Slide the teeth of the clip down until it's snug, and push the clips flat against your head to secure them.

Repeat for all wefts if you're using more than one.

Assuming you've had a few tries at clipping in your extensions, we can now get started on blending your extensions with your own hair.

There are a few different tips and tricks depending on the hair type you have, so we'll take you through how to blend hair extensions for straight, wavy and curly hair.

How to Blend Hair Extensions with Straight Hair

We'll start off with how to blend extensions into straight hair. Once you've got your extensions clipped in and secure, you'll want to take your RiRi Hair Extensions Brush and run it through your extensions and natural hair.

Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots being gentle in doing so. If you're too rough, you might pull your extensions out or move them out of place.

This will help to blend the extension strands with your natural hair strands.

Some people find that teasing their hair at the roots before clipping in the wefts can help to give the clips more grip and keep them from slipping out, as well as helping to hide the clips a little better.

After brushing through your hair, you can comb your fingers through the ends of your hair to help blend the extensions in even more.

You can use a bit of Argan Oil Hair Treatment to run through your hair to nourish the strands, too.

Using Heat Tools on Hair Extensions: Is It Really Okay?

A lot of people use hair straighteners to help them achieve seamless hair extensions, but you need to be extra careful, here.

Human Hair Extensions

If you're using human hair clip-in extensions, using heat tools is generally completely fine!

Because it is real hair, it should be able to withstand the heat. But never forget to use heat protectant and only ever use a low heat setting (nothing higher than 180 degrees).

Run the straighteners over your hair, clamping your extensions and natural hair together so you can get all the hair to blend together. This can help if your extensions are creating any bumps or lumps.

What About Synthetic Hair Extensions?

With synthetic hair extensions, it's really best to avoid using any heat tools altogether. Synthetic fibres used for extensions aren't really equipped to take on the heat, so you can damage the extensions and ruin them (unless they're specifically stated as heat-protected extensions).

One of the biggest reasons why our customers choose RiRi's synthetic extensions over others is that you really don't need to use heat on them!

They all come pre-styled in natural and gorgeous hairstyles, and you only need to run our Hair Extensions Brush through them to return them to their original state.

How to Blend Hair Extensions with Wavy Hair

If you have naturally wavy hair or you want to create a wavy hairstyle using your hair extensions, we've got just the tips you need.

Once you have installed your clip-in extensions, use the same brush-through method we discussed earlier, and use our Argan Oil Treatment to smooth down any frizz or flyaways.

You can use your fingers to fluff up your hair to create more volume, which will help to hide the extension wefts.

You can use a curling wand or hair crimper on your natural hair before installing your extensions so that when you clip them in, the wave patterns match better. As always, use a heat protectant and try not to use heat above 180 degrees.

If you're using human hair clip-ins, you can use the curling wand or crimper on your extensions, too, but try to avoid using heat tools on your synthetics.

Instead, choose our wavy extensions, like our Summer Teale Beachy Waves or our Eve Gale Hollywood Waves.

How to Blend Hair Extensions with Curly Hair

Blending extensions with curly hair might seem like a bit of a challenge – but it's really not!

Of course, there are lots of different curl types and curl patterns, so for the best seamless hair extensions, you should pick a set that's pre-styled and closely matches your natural curl pattern.

When you're blending your curly extensions into your natural hair, use your fingers to gently run through your hair to bring the curl pattern of your extensions and the natural hair together.

If your curly RiRi's need a bit of curl added back into them, you can use our Hair Extensions Brush to twist a section of the hair around the paddle, gently brushing through at the same time. This will add more bounce and volume to your extensions.

A good flip and shake always helps, too! Flip your head over and use your fingers to tousle your hair. You can use a curling wand to add in more curl or definition, depending on the look you want. Just make sure to use a low heat setting and use a heat protectant before styling.

Our Argan Oil Treatment is fab for slicking down frizz and flyaways, and our curly girls find it really helps to define their curls even more.

Making sure your extensions blend in with your own hair is the key to naturally beautiful-looking hair. Nobody wants to see those clips poking out, right?

The quality of hair extensions also plays a big part in how natural your extensions will look.

Cheaper extensions will have a fake sheen to them, and they'll feel very plastic-y – you definitely won't be able to achieve seamless hair extensions with these! And poor quality human hair extensions can be really prone to tangling, matting and shedding.

FAQs

Why Won't My Hair Extensions Blend into My Natural Hair?

First and foremost, make sure the hair extensions you're using are of good quality. Cheap or poorly made extensions will have a plastic-y appearance and feel. You should also be clipping your extensions as close to your roots as possible, teasing the roots if you wish. Finally, make sure you've brushed through your own hair and hair extensions before installing the wefts, and be sure to brush through the hair after installing to help blend them together.

How Do I Find the Right Hair Extension Shade for My Hair?

We offer a free colour-matching service that takes away all the guesswork for you! Send us a clear photo of your hair in natural lighting, and we'll match it to the closest shade we have.

Can I Use Heat on Hair Extensions?

Yes...and no. Using heat on human hair extensions and wigs is generally a-okay. But always use a heat protectant and never use heat above 180 degrees. You should try to avoid using heat on your synthetic extensions, as the fibres aren't designed to withstand the heat. Luckily, our synthetic clip-ins are pre-styled and don't need to be heat-treated!
